How to Record Spatial Video

The impending launch of the Apple Vision Pro in early 2024 offers an opportune moment to delve into the process of recording spatial video on the iPhone 15 Pro. With the introduction of this feature in iOS 17.2, Apple aims to ensure seamless integration between its flagship product and the brand-new headset.

Regrettably, the iPhone doesn’t provide the full immersive experience of spatial video playback; it can only be viewed as a regular clip. Nevertheless, if you wish to have a collection of clips ready for viewing once the Apple headset is accessible, enabling and capturing spatial video on the latest Pro iPhones is a straightforward process.

This guide outlines the necessary settings for recording spatial video on the iPhone 15 Pro, along with the steps for capturing a clip and the current capabilities once recorded.

How to record spatial video on iPhone 15 Pro:

  1. Enable spatial video in Settings:
Navigate to the main Settings app, access the Camera options, proceed to Formats, and toggle the Spatial Video for Apple Vision Pro option to on.

  2. Activate spatial video in the Camera app:
In the Camera app, when set to video mode, locate a small Vision Pro icon in the bottom left corner. Tap it to activate (turns yellow) and rotate your iPhone to landscape orientation. Vertical recording of spatial video is currently not supported.

  3. Record a video in landscape:
Record your video as usual, keeping in mind that one minute of spatial video in 1080p resolution at 30fps (the only available option currently) consumes 130 MB of space—considerably more than an equivalent normal video clip, estimated by Apple to take up about 60MB per minute.
Watching the video on the iPhone does not showcase the spatial effect; it only displays a “Spatial” badge. To properly experience it, it appears necessary to acquire a Vision Pro headset when it becomes available next year.

Additionally, the only edits feasible for a spatial video on your phone are trimming or muting the clip. Apple’s video editing app, Final Cut Pro, is expected to gain the ability to edit spatial video in a 2024 update. Opening the video in other VR headsets supposedly provides more comprehensive capabilities for appreciation and editing.
